June 22 - Applications for Winter School in Pitlochry became available on-line

Winter School 2010, organised by RSCDS Headquarters, will again be held at the beautiful Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry, Scotland. Actually, there are two schools:
School 1 – Monday 22 February to Saturday 27 February
School 2 – Sunday 28 February to Friday 5 March.

Thursday, July 2 - Summer Dancing at Trinity

(Teacher this evening is The Golden Voice, Steve Coombs.) Summer dancing returns to breezy Seeley Hall on the second floor of Trinity College, 6 Hoskin Avenue, on the University of Toronto campus, Thursdays from 8 to 10 pm for a total of six nights beginning June 25 and concluding August 6 (Please note: no dancing Thursday, July 9). The dances will be briefed and walked through by Guest Teachers from the Toronto area. Parking is available, and there are two subway stops nearby (St George & Museum).  Details on this map.  Dancing is a cooperative effort. . . volunteers bring juice and cookies for our break, and are reimbursed from money collected ($3 for members; $5 for non-members).

Friday, July 3 - MacMusical

The HAMILTON DISTRICT YOUTH THEATRE (viz. Hamilton in Scotland!) proudly presents MacMusical: a musical revue with a wee taste of Scotland. Previously performed in LONDON, EDINBURGH, NEW JERSEY and OHIO by this award-winning group of young Scots. At the Meadowvale Theatre, 6315 Montevideo Rd., Mississauga. Doors open at 6:15pm; at 6:25 there will be a pre-show performance by the St George’s High School band (from Edinburgh). The MacMusical review begins at 7:00pm. Tickets are just $13. There is NO DANCING Monday July 6th. Regular Monday sessions resume July 13 (see below)..

July 6 - 10 - Haliburton School of The Arts -- Scottish Country Dance Classes

The amazing Keppies, Maggie & Duncan, return to Ontario cottage country for a popular week of dance instruction and fellowship at the beautiful Fleming College Campus. A week of instruction and fun about $265. Complete course descriptions and registration information posted on the School for the Arts website: Novice & Intermediate dancers and Advanced dancers. Fleming College will advise about accommodation. At the end of the course, dancers get to show off their skills Saturday, July 11th at the Haliburton Highland Games.

July 7 - Summer Dancing at Broadlands Begins [maybe. . . ]

Note: This venue is affected by the civic workers' strike -- No dancing if the strike is still on! Every Tuesday in July and August. Join Carole Skinner for summer fun dances, mostly related to a specific castle or place in Scotland. All levels of dancer are welcome. $5 at the door. 7:30-9:30pm. At Broadlands Community Centre, 19 Castlegrove Blvd, Don Mills [ MAP ]. This is a beautiful, air conditioned space, with an engineered wood floor. For further info, contact Carole Skinner.

Monday, July 13 - Summer Dancing at Oshawa

Mondays from 7:30 - 9:30pm, to August 10 at the air-conditioned Fernhill-Nipigon Community Centre (West Door), 144 Fernhill Blvd., Oshawa [ MAP ]. Plentiful parking. $4 at the door. July 13 - Cathedral Choir of St Giles

Lovers of choral music and homesick D.S. (Displaced Scots), will want to keep Monday evening July 13 open for an exciting concert by the Cathedral Choir of St. Giles Edinburgh, Scotland. The place: St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at the corner of King and Simcoe Streets in downtown Toronto. The time: 7:00pm. Admission is $10 at the door. July 18 - Orillia Scottish Festival

Orillia Scottish Dancers invite dancers of all ages to join us in the mass dancing of the Opening Ceremonies. Sign up as a 4-couple set representing your social group or come on your own. Individual dancers will be matched up to form 2-couple sets and will dance three very short simple dances for several thousand spectators. Honoraria are provided for each full set (4 couples) representing a SCD group. The designated dances are designed for the learner dancer and easy to demonstrate on grass. Children and youth dancers are most welcome. Parade 12:00pm. Opening Ceremonies 1:30. Pavilion dances adjacent to Lake Couchiching will be a mixture of communal dances and selected demonstration dances from each group. (2-4pm). Aug 22 - Woodglen Summer Dance & Potluck BBQ -- at Harcourt Park

Everyone is welcome to this event, sometimes known as "the Little Straggle Lake Ceilidh' which has become an end-of-summer tradition. Starting at 2pm, we dance in the rustic hall of the Harcourt Park Community Centre, near Wilberforce in the Haliburton/Bancroft area. After about 2 hrs of dancing (briefed & walked) we stroll up the hill to Ron & Betty Baker's cottage for refreshments, a decent chat and a cooling swim. Bring a small contribution and share in the potluck supper and BBQ and linger on the back deck listening to the loons. There is excellent, reasonably-priced accommodation nearby at Martinwood Resort. Sept 13 - Old Dunfermline

Jack Pryde is a raconteur and Heritage Guide par excellence. His presentation of nostalgic photos of Dunfermline was a sell-out performance at Carnegie Hall. The programme covers "The Auld Grey Toun" from the early 20th Century to the present. One performance only in Toronto, at the Elgin Room, Sheraton Centre Hotel (opposite City Hall on Queen Street). Sep 27 - Scavenger Hunt at High Park

Bring family and friends to a fun afternoon Scavenger Hunt, 2pm - 4-ish. We have rented a picnic area (from mid-morning ‘til early evening) so pack a picnic for prior to the Hunt and after. You will hunt in groups throughout beautiful High Park. Prizes awarded around 4:30pm. SCD/Ceilidh dancing from about 3:30pm. Contact: Ishbel Thomson 905-826-7842. Oct 2 - 4, 2009 - Ottawa Valley Dance Weekend

Join us for a great dancing weekend. Featured musicians are Muriel Johnstone and Keith Smith. Guest teachers are Eric Finley (Scotland), Mairi Hand (Idaho), and Bill Zobel (British Columbia) The weekend will begin with a concert by Muriel & Keith on Friday evening, followed by 3 separate classes on Saturday morning, a dinner and Gala dance Saturday night, combined class Sunday morning and a teachers' class Sunday afternoon. The concert tickets reserved exclusively for dancers and friends until August 15th. After that tickets will be open to the public, so we encourage you to get in touch with us before then. 2010 - Summer School at St Andrews, Scotland

The Society holds an annual Summer School in St Andrews, Scotland. Approximately one thousand dancers from around the world attend this School each year to learn more about the dancing and dances, old and new; to enjoy dancing together; and to appreciate the wealth of Scotland's traditional music The School is traditionally held over a month-long period covering the last two weeks in July and the first two weeks of August. Participants may choose to attend for one week or any two weeks on a residential or non-residential basis. There is a full range of Scottish country dance classes for every level from beginners to fully-qualified teachers. These classes run each morning from Monday to Saturday, with optional classes in the afternoons and social dancing in the evening.

Week 1: 25 July to 1 August
Week 2: 1 August to 8 August
Week 3: 8 August to 15 August
Week 4: 15 August to 22 August.

Those wishing to train as teachers of Scottish country dancing may attend the examination courses at Summer School. The courses for Teaching Certificate Part 1 (Units 2 and 3) and for Teaching Certificate Part 2 (Unit 5) each last for two weeks and both are offered during weeks 1 and 2 or weeks 3 and 4.

Classes are held in different venues across the town; all are taught by experienced and qualified teachers assisted by accomplished musicians.

In addition to the morning Scottish Country Dance classes there is a class for Highland steps for country dancing, and in the afternoons there is a variety of optional classes including men's Highland dancing or ladies' Step dancing, and practice sessions for the evening social dancing.
There are a variety of scholarships available for attendance at the School, and a reduced fee is offered to those under twenty-one attending on either a residential or non-residential basis. The scholarship application form is usually available in October for the following year's School.
Summer School application forms are normally available in mid-December. More info at the RSCDS Headquarters website.
